Spousal Support (Alimony)
Spousal support (also known as “alimony”) is when one spouse provides financial assistance (other than child support) to the other spouse. Spousal support is not automatic in every divorce. Whether the court will award spousal support depends on several factors, the most basic of which are the financial needs of the spouse requesting support, the earning ability of the requesting spouse, the ability of the other spouse to pay, and the length of the marriage.
